Crime And Gangs

Though many people want to ignore it, South Carolina's crime rate continues to climb.

According to a 2006 study, 216,262 crimes were committed in the State of South Carolina. All South Carolinians have the right to feel safe on their streets and in their homes.

Here is how the South Carolina legislature and policymakers ought to address the problem:
  1. Continue to support community organizations to help stop the break-down South Carolina families.

The breakdown of the family is one of the main reasons our children become criminals and gang members. The State must work with outside organizations like the Boys and Girls Club and Big Brother and Big Sister to make sure that all our children have a safe place to turn for advice and friendship.

  2. Target gangs.

South Carolina must have stringent Anti-Gang legislation, because our police and citizens are paying the price.

  3. Efficiently fund our district attorneys and court system.

One of the largest problems is that criminals aren't kept in the jails long enough. The South Carolina legislature must develop a more efficient funding and a distribution policy for courts, district attorneys, judges, and prisons.

  4. We need to make it our top priority to keep our criminals in jail and our streets safe by abolishing parole and increasing the prison sentence for violent criminals.

  5. Support more financial assistance for training and participation in the federal 287(g) program to deport illegal immigrants who commit crimes.

  6. Provide tougher sentences for crimes committed against senior citizens.

According to the National Sheriffs Association: Only one in fourteen cases of crimes against seniors - including rape, robbery and assault - is ever reported, giving offenders a sense that it's okay to beat and abuse our friends, neighbors and family members.

We need to take immediate action to protect our senior citizens so they can feel safe on their streets and in their own neighborhoods. Criminals need to know that if they target and assault a senior citizen, they will go to jail for a long, long time

I have a strong history of supporting stringent criminal laws that protect the citizens of the Palmetto State, and I am proud to stand up for South Carolina's law enforcement officers.
