Empowering Our Youth
André met with student government leaders from across the state to plan a South
Carolina Collegiate Summit to replace the annual Student Legislature which was eliminated
due to budget cuts.
"We need to show students we are interested in their futures,"
André said. "We desperately need young leaders right now to speak to their hopes
and dreams; student leaders to inspire others; and student leaders who can help
their fellow students. We need a new hope to help us feel that we as a state together
can achieve anything."
André believes college students are going to be interested
in higher education problems since it affects them directly — with specific interest
in tuition costs, college accessibility, and state lottery funds.
Due to budget
cuts, this program was cut out and André plans to work with these young leaders
to hold a South Carolina Collegiate Summit within the state house to address students'
needs and to provide a platform. "I think it is important to make sure this program
continues because we've gotten great ideas out of these students in the past. I
hope to give an opportunity back to college leaders where they may have the voice
that they deserve to elected officials in Columbia. These are the individuals who
will ultimately be affected by the actions of state government. I want to offer
them an avenue to present their ideas," André said.
The South Carolina Collegiate Summit will involve student leaders from every campus
in South Carolina, including student government leaders, fraternity and sorority
leaders, and minority group leaders. The South Carolina Collegiate Summit will take
place during the Fall 2009 Semester.
