With the three candidates bunched so closely with regard to the funds on hand, the advantage will go to the organization which is running the leanest campaign, which is clearly Andre Bauer.
According to the most recent quarterly reports, both Bauer and Henry McMaster showed approximately $1.4 million on hand, with Congressman Gresham Barrett reporting $1.56 million, just $40,000 more than he reported at the end of December.
The biggest difference is the spending. Bauer is very conservative with his campaign spending, just as he is with the state budget. Both McMaster and Barrett show a pattern of big-spending. They have a very high ‘burn-rate’ with high overhead.
Bauer’s quarterly spending for overhead expenses is less than $100,000. His total spending for the quarter was $125,000, which included TV and radio advertising.
By contrast, McMaster’s spending topped a quarter-of-a-million dollars, while Barrett spent a whopping $369,000. For the entire gubernatorial campaign, Barrett has spent over $900,000, McMaster has spent over $470,000, while Bauer has saved virtually all of his resources, spending only $160,000.
When you apply their spending levels to the coming quarter, you see that, mathematically, Bauer has actually taken the lead in campaign finance. He will have more funds available for the campaign.
This is one of Bauer’s strategies that has allowed him to win upset elections time after time. He is extremely careful with his resources. In the end, he will probably be able to spend more on advertising than his opponents because they have already squandered so much of their money.
Combined with his work ethic, and his enormous following of loyal supporters, Andre Bauer has the ability to win elections that the others just don’t have.
