Statement from Lt Governor André Bauer
Monday, June 22, 2009
Earlier today my staff had been in contact with the staff of Governor Mark Sanford to follow up on some inquiries as to his whereabouts.
The Governor’s staff communicated to my staff that they knew his whereabouts, and all was ok.
I have just learned that this is, in fact, not the case after placing a call to Governor Sanford’s chief of staff requesting an immediate phone conversation with the Governor. That request was denied because the Governor’s chief of staff does not know where the Governor is, and has not communicated with the Governor since he left South Carolina last Thursday.
I cannot take lightly that his staff has not had communication with him for more than four days, and that no one, including his own family, knows his whereabouts.
I, along with the people of South Carolina, just want to know that our Governor is safe. Â

** High Priority **
I wanted to pass along the following update regarding the governor’s location.
The governor is hiking along the Appalachian Trail. I apologize for taking so long to send this update, and was waiting to see if a more definitive idea of what part of the Trail he was on before we did so.
I want to emphasize that this isn’t something that either staff or Mrs. Sanford is concerned about. As we said earlier today, it isn’t unusual for the governor to be out of pocket for several days after the legislative session. We knew he would be difficult to reach, and that he would be checking in infrequently. Given the media attention this has generated, we’ll obviously update you once we have some more specifics to pass along.
