I Believe - Do You?

Friday, November 13th, 2009

SC EmergMedicalServices DLP 01-22-08

I would like to share with you an issue that deserves attention and a swift response - the recent ruling on the I Believe License Plate affirming the plates are unconstitutional.

This ruling by Federal Judge Currie is disheartening, however I plan to continue to move forward to assure the voices of Christians’ throughout our Nation are heard by means of an appeal to this ruling because it is time that people stand up for their beliefs. Enough is enough.

We as citizens of the United States could say that this is yet another example of judicial activism, of federal judges out of control. Although my instincts as a United States citizen and as a Christian tell me that it’s even deeper than that. I have spoken with many folks around the country that think it’s another attack on Christianity and we are not going to sit by and watch this one happen. We must take a stand.

Above all, I believe an automobile tag is a matter of choice. I believe that every South Carolinian has the right to go to the Department of Motor Vehicles and choose among dozens and dozens of license plates the one particular tag that reflects something they want to share with the rest of the world about their personality and beliefs.

I am proud and unrelenting in my support of the Legislature’s unanimous enactment of this plate.

Why? Because the “I believe” plate reflects core values that are meaningful to our society, promoting love, joy, and comfort in our spiritual lives, and accommodating to every citizen’s right of free exercise of any and all religions.

Every citizen has the constitutional protections of free speech and expression. I don’t understand why witnessing for fundamental, enduring values is controversial or threatening.

We must take a stand - CLICK HERE - to join thousands of other Americans by signing the I Believe Petition.

Warm regards,

Andre

The Can-Do Conservatives of America Support Bauer for Governor

Thursday, November 12th, 2009

I am honored to have the support of the Can-Do Conservatives of America for my campaign. They represent a group of conservatives, who are handicapped or are friends, family, and/or supporters of the handicapped.

“Unfortunately there are very few exceptions to the rule  that the Republicans don’t reach out to the disabled.  The citizens of South Carolina are very blessed to be served by one such exception in Lt. Governor André Bauer.”

“Throughout his career in public service, André has been a champion for the disabled, seniors, and poor in the Palmetto State.  He has done this while standing strong on our Conservative values and principles! We are very proud to endorse André Bauer for Governor of South Carolina!  He will be a leader The Palmetto State and the rest of the nation can be proud of!”

Statement of Lt. Governor André Bauer in Charleston Nov. 10 regarding I Believe tag ruling

Tuesday, November 10th, 2009

I have asked you to meet me at Charleston’s Four Corners of Law, which is a most appropriate place to tell you how disappointed I am in Judge Currie’s ruling.

She talks about an abstract separation of church and state, yet here we stand at the Four Corners of Law, where city, county, and federal courthouses stand with St Michael’s Church on real ground in a real world.

She talks about separation of church and state, yet history records that on “April 27, 1789, the Senate, and two days later the House passed a resolution in Congress giving instructions with regard to the Inauguration of George Washington as the first President of the United States: Resolved, that after the oath shall have been administered to the President, he, attended by the Vice President, and the members of the Senate, and House of Representatives, proceed to St. Paul’s Chapel, to hear divine service, to be performed by the Chaplain of Congress already appointed.”

Our country began with divine guidance, and on this eve of Veterans Day, I tell you it continues to need divine guidance. The judge says a simple license plate “amounts to a state endorsement not only of religion in general, but of a specific sect in particular.”

For those who say proclaiming “I believe” violates the constitution by giving preference to Christianity, I think this lawsuit clearly discriminates against persons of faith.  I will ask the state Attorney General to vigorously appeal this ruling because it is time that people stand up for their beliefs.  Enough is enough.

I could say that Currie is a liberal judge appointed by Bill Clinton who is using her personal wishes to overrule the Legislature and the will of the thousands of South Carolinians who want to purchase the tags

I could say that this is yet another example of judicial activism, of federal judges out of control.  My instincts tell me that it’s even deeper than that.  I think it’s another attack on Christianity and I’m not going to sit by and watch this one happen.

I am personally offended by Judge Currie’s ruling and especially her awarding legal fees to the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee and Americans United for Separation of Church and State.  If these national groups are so strongly opposed to letting South Carolinians have a choice about their automobile tags, then let them pay their own legal fees.  She is chiding the lieutenant governor for what she claims to be a waste of the taxpayers’ money, but then she turns around and awards these groups their legal fees.

SC Top Officials Should Meet to Halt Transfer of Terrorists to Charleston

SC Top Officials Should Meet to Halt Transfer of Terrorists to Charleston

Lt. Governor André Bauer asked Friday that Governor Mark Sanford, State Adjutant General Stan Spears, and Attorney General Henry McMaster meet with him immediately so the state’s top executive, legal, and military leaders can determine that civilian security is not threatened by the Obama Administration’s potential transfer to the Charleston Naval Brig of terrorists now confined in the Guantanamo base in Cuba.

Lt. Governor Bauer said:

South Carolina’s leaders need to come together to act in concert.  Charleston is one of the top-tier tourist destination cities in our country, and we cannot let this issue jeopardize the state’s economic interests concentrated there in its shipping and aeronautics industries.

I hope the Attorney General can obtain an emergency injunction against the Department of Defense or whoever is responsible for making the actual decision to transfer the detainees.  This injunction would bar the transfer until he concludes his investigation into the safety of the detention facilities. General Stan Spears’ experience in leading our National Guard troops will be invaluable in this task, especially in light of recent reports that loads of ammunition, grenades, and other materials have been smuggled off the base and stored nearby apparently for sale on the black market.

The state’s political and business leadership should also be mobilized to ask the state’s two senior Democrats in Washington — Congressman Clyburn and Congressman John Spratt — to use their influence with President Obama to remove South Carolina from the list of proposed transfer sites.

I want to thank Sen. Ronnie Cromer for having had the foresight last session to introduce S305, which is a concurrent resolution asking the President to drop Charleston from the list of potential sites.  His legislation noted that an assessment of 516 detainees by the Combating Terrorism Center at West Point identified only six detainees who posed no risk to the United States; and that 14 of the most dangerous, uniquely lethal terrorists in the world are currently being held at Guantanamo Bay, including three 9/11 co-conspirators. Furthermore, 60 detainees released from Guantanamo have been killed or recaptured after taking up arms against allied forces in and around Afghanistan.

I’d like to pull together our political, economic and military leadership to present a unified effort to stop this transfer, and to ensure that it is handled safely in the event that our congressional leadership can’t persuade President Obama to drop Charleston from the list of potential sites.

Lt. Governor Bauer asks Attorney General McMaster to take immediate action to block the transfer of terrorists to Charleston Navy brig

Lt. Governor André Bauer said today that he will ask Attorney General Henry McMaster to take immediate legal action to block the transfer of terrorist detainees from the Guantanamo Bay detention facility to the Navy brig in Charleston.

Bauer’s request is based on reports that officials at the White House are considering transferring prisoners to the Lowcountry facility to face military hearings.

“I was shocked to learn that the Obama administration was considering housing these terrorists in South Carolina,” Bauer said.  “I find this option to be completely unacceptable – not only for the security risk that our citizens would face harboring murderers who have already taken American lives, but more so the possibility that these terrorists might be afforded the rights and protections of the very country they have tried to destroy if they are brought onto U.S. soil.”

Lt. Governor Bauer also plans to contact other ranking officials both here in South Carolina and in Washington D.C. to send a clear unified message to the President – the people of the great state of South Carolina do not want these terrorists in our backyard.
